Higher energy costs and a dependency on foreign oil are hurting Louisiana and America. We need to take immediate action to lower gas prices, by using the strategic petroleum reserve, by increasing drilling in Louisiana and domestically, first on-shore and then off-shore.
At the same time, we need to expand our ability to produce and use alternative forms of energy- including solar, synthetic fuels, geothermal, wind, and other sources. Alternative energy sources are integral for our long-term survival, so we cannot forget that drilling is to help us through the transition to alternative energy.
We must also secure a fair allocation of the royalties from Outer Continental Shelf production. These royalties are increasing just like the price of gasoline. Louisiana and other coastal states are currently bearing the risks and costs of offshore drilling , without getting any more of the royalties. We deserve a fairer share of that money here in Louisiana, so we can address our needs, including restoring our coast and wetlands. Also, oil and gas companies can be encouraged to do their part to support recovery from the damage caused by their activities. Many energy producers support restoring the wetlands so they can realize the return on their investments; I think we can work with energy companies in this respect to address the long-term needs of Louisiana.
With more drilling and expanding alternative energy sources, we can increase our energy independence and bring down energy costs. I think we can do better, we need to do better, and I will do better to help improve the energy cost crisis and the lives of Louisianans.
